SAD Light Therapy
Light therapy uses a special frequency intense light for the face that overcomes symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), such as oversleeping, tiredness, lack of energy, overeating, low moods, low cognitive function, poor alertness, and social withdrawal. When not enough sunlight is received naturally, production of melatonin is prolonged, normally only released at night to help us sleep. Another factor is thought to be low serotonin levels (a feature of depression) which improve significantly in the summer. Evidence has shown that serotonin levels increase with exposure to bright light - SSRI drugs such as Prozac have the same effect.
I have a LUMIE Arabica light that's certified to the Medical Device directive and delivers the industry standard 10,000 lux at about 50cm. Simply using 'daylight' or 'full spectrum' lights at home will not work as they're not bright enough. 2,500 lux (lux is the technical measure of brightness) is roughly five times brighter than a well-lit office. 10,000 lux lights are about as bright as a spring morning on a clear day and for most people sitting in front of a light like this for around 30 minutes a day will be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms. It is preferable before 5pm to avoid stimulating your hormones too much to avoid sleepiness. You don't have to stare at the light, but light must reach your eyes at the right distance to deliver the lux strength. Here, you can read or listen to music whilst lying on the couch with the light to the side of your face.
