Used and frequently recommended by NHS physiotherapists, TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) places electrode sticky pads surrounding the area of pain. Soothing pulses are sent via the electrodes through the skin and along the nerve fibres. The TENS machine generates pulses (controlled by the user at all times) that suppress pain signals to the brain. TENS encourages the body to produce higher levels of its own natural pain killing chemicals called Endorphins. It offers drug free pain relief, and has no side effects.

It is often used alongside other pain relieving treatments and programmes for a more holistic approach. Consider, in addition or alternative to TENS, Electro Muscular Stimulation, Relaxing or Deep Tissue Massage, Remedial Massage, Sports Massage, Stretching, Strengthening and Aerobic Exercise Programmes, Nutritional Therapy, Homoeopathy, Herbalist & Aromatherapy Treatments, Ayurveda, Meditation and Chanting, Hot Tub Hydrotherapy, Weight Loss Calorie Controlled Diets, Reiki, or Reflexology.

I came to Steve to help strengthen my leg muscles for knee surgery. The TENS is excellent, I'm in a lot of pain all of the time but this really helps - it can even stop me needing to take morphine.                         Stuart
